PHILADELPHIA (PLHIV) – Figo is Northern Liberties’ cool new place for Italian food
Northern Liberties is home to a chic new Italian Instagram spot that’s so cool it’s in its name.

Figo, or cool in Italian, is an elevated full-service bar and restaurant.

The 10,000 square foot space is one of the largest in the area and is home to two restaurants, Figo Ristorante and Figo Pizzeria.

The pizzeria serves specialty pies and hoagies with its own appetizer for take out and delivery.

The cuisine at Figo Ristorante is traditional Italian cuisine with a modern twist, classic Bucatini and Meatballs in their marinara and their homemade meatballs with spicy Rigatoni, served in a creamy red pepper sauce.

The restaurant also aims to provide an experience for its guests, from the Porterhouse for two, with a 3-pound porterhouse, to the Figo Soda Tray, served with four shots of your choice, homemade syrups and a bottle of San Pellegrino.
For dessert, their Espresso Martini Flight is a big hit. The flight is accompanied by three martinis, two shaken and one frozen. The dining room and the pizzeria are now open every day.

Pretty Girls Cook is looking great but tasting better
Teacher-turned-caterer Dominique Shields has just celebrated the fifth anniversary of her Northern Liberties restaurant, Pretty Girls Cook.

The restaurant serves eclectic cuisine and recipes Shields has learned throughout his career.
From the restaurant’s biggest hit, Ladies Love Salmon, a grilled salmon fillet with homemade confetti rice, to Make ‘Em Shout Brussel Sprouts, with bacon, pecan candies and goat cheese.

Pretty Girls Cook also offers Sunday Brunch with their Wake and Bake Fried French Toast Breakfast Sandwich and homemade juices for you to enjoy their BYOB.

The decor is dedicated to the powerful women on the walls and the color pink.

Shields says she wanted to create a vibe in her restaurant to be inclusive and for women to lift up on each other.

Caphe Roastersin Kensington is the first Vietnamese in Philadelphia
“Caphe Roasters is the first and only Vietnamese café in Philadelphia,” says co-founder Thu Pham.

It is also a cafe serving modern Vietnamese dishes.

Caphe means coffee in Vietnamese. Their signature drink is Ca Phe Sua Da made with their blend of Vietnamese espresso and slowly poured over sweetened condensed milk. They use a Vietnamese filter called Phin in the interactive brewing process. Thu says it makes a strong and sturdy cup of coffee. Avocado Coffee is part of the rotating menu and looks like an avocado smoothie.
Chef Jacob Trinh is a first generation Vietnamese American and uses family recipes to create the menu.
He takes the Vietnamese-style hoagies of his childhood to the next level.
There is the OG Bahn Mi made with Vietnamese ham and chicken liver pate. There is Bahn Mi fried chicken with Gochujang frosting, minus the pate. And eight spice wings called Tam Gia Vi Wings, made with citrus fruits, seaweed, sesame seeds and other spices.

Caphe Roasters also offers desserts, including ice cream available all year round. It is made with sweetened condensed milk, an important part of the culture. You can even float a latte.

Revitalizing the district of Kensington is a mission of Caphe. They donate a portion of their profits to a nonprofit education group called 12 Plus, while also developing the Vietnamese coffee movement.

Meet the Philly Cookie Company: new maker of savory shortbread cookies
You may have spotted a new kind of cookie at your favorite local cafe.

This is the pandemic project of Loc Pham, a baker turned entrepreneur during the COVID-19 containment.
When the world closed in, he only had free time. So he created a collection of shortbread cookies and granola bars. It now has 11 flavors, including vegan and gluten free ones.

He officially launched his Philly Cookie Company on February 1.

Born in Vietnam and raised in South Jersey, Pham started cooking when he was little.

By the age of 16, he was working in pastry shops and graduated from Drexel University with the intention of finding a job in the food industry. But, he says, “I hated it.”

His passion is to cook things by hand. So he went to work for a bakery where he continues to work full time from 4 a.m. to noon. Then, at the end of his shift, he works another eight hours for himself.
His recipe is based on a traditional Scottish shortbread, but he adds brown sugar and sea salt to create a more flavorful flavor that is the perfect companion to your coffee.

Pie Bird Farm uses historic Bucks County property to produce pies
Jennifer Brodsky and Eric Theesfeld are adjusting to farm life.

The couple moved into historic Haney Farm in Bucks County and converted the property to Pie Bird Farm.
Jennifer is a passionate farmer. Born in Philadelphia, she spent a year in Ireland working on a farm and devoted the last two decades to farming. With her husband, they hope to transform the property, abandoned for five years, into a productive farm with fruit and cereal crops.

In the meantime, they have turned the farm into a bakery. These are artisanal pies made from local and organic ingredients. The apple pie weighs four pounds.

You can see pieces of organic butter in the crust. And the pumpkin pie is a special blend of heirloom squash and ginger ale. Thanksgiving Pie is a savory dish that takes all your favorite holiday favorites and turns them into a pie topped with a mashed potato crust.

Former Navy opens Semper Pie to give back to military
Kevin Murphy never imagined he would bake cheesecakes for a living. But Semper Pie is an American dream come true for him and his wife Crystal.

The former Marine was medically released in 2012 after serving four years with two tours in Afghanistan. He worked a few odd jobs as he made the transition from military life. For Thanksgiving in 2020, his wife Crystal made a cheesecake to celebrate the family holiday. The couple decided to turn this apple pie cheesecake into a business.
Kevin and Crystal started making cheesecakes in their home and selling them online during the pandemic. They closed their doors, so they found commercial kitchens that could function as ghost kitchens. Eventually, they found their own storefront in Boyertown, where they now work together to create a cheesecake menu at Semper Pie.

Apple pie is the original and still on the menu.
They alternate flavors every week. There’s always a keto and gluten-free option on the menu. The pies are four inches with nine inch options available for pre-order.

They have a brownie base, a monster cookie, a strawberry, and a chocolate banana.
Each pie they sell comes with a donation of 22 cents to a local military cause.

Home chef brings Middle Eastern street food to South Jersey
During the pandemic, home chef Mia Eylon began posting weekly prepared meals for porch pickup on social media. His business was a huge success. Mia was encouraged to follow her dream and open Mia’s Meals Falafel Bar in Haddonfield, NJ in June 2021.

Falafel is a deep-fried Middle Eastern fast food.

“The falafel ball is crisp on the inside and really soft on the inside. It’s delicious,” says Mia Eylon, owner of Mia Meals Falafel Bar.

It offers the traditional falafel starter in the form of a pita, bowl or salad. Each includes hummus, Israeli salad, Israeli pickles and tahini.

“What makes me happier?” Seeing people enjoy what they eat really fills my heart and the more they eat, the happier I am, ”adds Mia.

Also on the menu are customer favorites, shawarma fries and a refreshing tahini milkshake.

The Penn Museum dresses up for a look at fashion through the centuries
What could an anthropological museum say about fashion?

As TaRhonda Thomas discovered, a lot – over two thousand years old.
The current exhibit at the Penn Museum in University City shows fashion through the ages in The Stories We Wear.

On display are outfits and objects spanning five themes, examining outfits worn for everything from performance to sports. The ticket office is included in the entrance fee to the museum and the exhibition will run until June 12, 2022.
