Knitwear: a unique addition to the clothing market


Imesha Ruwanpura, a girl who juggles a full-time job and her studies, has also impressively launched her own business at the same time. In her spare time, she runs her own clothing line Mesh Clothing.

Ruwanpura is an alumnus of Musaeus College and holds a First Class Diploma in International Business from Plymouth University, UK, and Postgraduate Diploma from CIM, UK. Currently, she works full time at MAS Holdings in the business development unit while also leading Mesh.

Brunch had a conversation with her to see how far Mesh Clothing has gone.

What inspired you to create your brand?

My mother has had a talent for tailoring since she was little. Although I loved fashion, I never really wanted to learn to sew. While in confinement I was home and had so much free time so I asked my mom to teach me how to sew a blouse; I immediately realized that I was also gifted with his talent and started sewing clothes for myself.

My mom works full time at a big bank and also runs her own brand. I’ve always been inspired by her and thought to myself, “Why can’t I do the same?

I wanted to make a unique addition to the clothing market. So, I started Mesh Clothing on the 1st July 2020.

When did you discover your passion for fashion?

Since my childhood, I have always been a girl who loves fashion. My mom always made me the most beautiful dresses and I grew up around sewing machines, fabrics and patterned blocks.

But the moment I started dreaming about having a brand was when I first walked into my mom’s old office, Brandix. I was an 11 year old girl, overwhelmed by all the processes of sewing a single garment. I still have all these memories in mind, and that’s what pushed me to my passion!

What is the particularity of your brand?

You can find hundreds of clothing stores offering beautiful designs in a range of standard UK sizes. The specialty of my brand is that I offer my customers the possibility of proposing their own design and adapting it to their measurements.

What is the story you want to tell with your collections?

I’ve always loved dressing up, and almost every girl, I think. And I think every girl should have the privilege of a perfect fit! All of my collections let the customer decide the exact details they want. If there’s a skirt you love and want longer, no worries, we’ve got you! We will tailor each garment to the exact measurements provided by our customers.

I think that’s what is unique about Mesh Clothing.

Do you believe in sustainability?

Indeed! Working full time in a company focused on sustainability, I think that’s a very important factor in the clothing industry. At Mesh, we try to reuse all of our leftover fabrics and reduce waste as much as possible. We plan to introduce waste-free scrunchies and masks for every custom order.

Do you have plans for the future?

I’m a huge fan of the “little girl, big plans” quote. I have several plans that I am working on. I plan to launch several other brands, specific to areas such as men’s wear and wedding guest wear. Each garment under my labels will be customizable.

However, my big dream is to have my own garment factory one day!
